It was interesting to learn that members of the South Jakarta
municipality administration have disguised themselves as the
customers of prostitutes, often appearing as school or university
students and waiting for prostitutes, day and night, in Blok M,
Melawai, Falatehan, Prapanca and Mahakam, all in South Jakarta.
The raids were conducted from Aug. 8 at midnight up to Aug. 9
at dawn by a joint team made up of the public order office of the
South Jakarta municipality administration and the Kebayoran Baru
Police, and successfully netted hundreds of prostitutes.
It is often the case, however, that a raid conducted by the
relevant authorities fails because it has been leaked or because
the officers in charge can easily be identified with the result
that the prostitutes can easily hide themselves. Thumbs up,
therefore, to the successful raid conducted by officers
pretending to solicit sex from prostitutes.
However, the authorities concerned must always be aware that
it is always possible that some irresponsible people may conduct
a similar raid with a view toward extorting prostitutes.
In the context of officers going undercover as part of the
raid, the Jakarta administration must also adopt this method in
its raids on gambling dens across the city. It is often the case,
however, that gambling dens sealed and closed after a raid, for
example in downtown Jakarta and Kelapa Gading, have been
reopened. The reason may be insufficient supervision or collusion
between the gambling den owners and certain officers in charge of
raids on gambling.
If the city administration can deploy undercover officers in
its raid on gambling across the capital city, all gambling dens,
big and small, can shortly be shut.
As a Jakarta resident longing for peace and order -- there are
often brawls at gambling sites -- I would like to call on the
governor of Jakarta and all his administration to eradicate all
immoral and indecent practices in Jakarta, making this beloved
capital city a place where comfort, security, peace and order
will reign supreme. To this end, continuous raids on immoral and
indecent practices must be conducted.
