Palembang, South Sumatra - The Mayor of Palembang, Ratu Dewa, has instructed schools in the local area to re-implement the Distance Learning (PJJ) system as thick haze from forest and land fires (karhutla) envelops the city.

“The decision regarding the implementation of learning must consider the current air conditions,” said Ratu Dewelse in Palembang on Saturday.

He stated that this policy was taken to safeguard the health of students, given that the air pollution status in Palembang City is currently in the dangerous category.

“Some time ago, online learning was implemented, but currently, several schools have transitioned to offline or face-to-face systems,” he explained.

According to him, school learning activities must be a key consideration in determining educational policies to protect students from the haze.

Therefore, he has requested that schools, alongside school committees, re-evaluate the current air pollution conditions.

“The results of these discussions will serve as a basis for determining whether face-to-face teaching and learning should continue or return to being conducted from home,” he said.

He also urged the residents of Palembang to wear masks when engaging in outdoor activities, particularly if haze levels consistently exceed safety thresholds without fluctuation.

“I urge the public to limit outdoor activities to avoid exposure to the haze. If it is necessary to go outside, it is best to wear a mask,” he added.
