JAKARTA – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the Thousand Islands region holds significant potential to become Jakarta’s new future, particularly in driving economic growth.

He made this remark while opening the Musyawarah Perencanaan Pembangunan (Musrenbang) of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government at City Hall on Thursday (16/4/2026).

“I always say that one of Jakarta’s futures that must be managed and cared for well is the Thousand Islands. It will become Jakarta’s future,” Pramono said.

In fact, the Thousand Islands have great opportunities for development, especially in the tourism and economic sectors.

Pramono assessed that the potential of the Thousand Islands is currently not being utilised to its maximum.

One step that will be taken is to carry out rebranding or build a new image for the area so that it becomes more widely known.

“If prepared from now, Jakarta hopefully will become better,” he said.

For example, Central Jakarta as the government centre, South Jakarta as the new economic centre, and the Thousand Islands as a flagship area based on regional potential.

Pramono emphasised that all regional development plans, including the development of the Thousand Islands, must remain aligned with the direction of central government policies.

According to him, local government cannot operate independently without being in harmony with the national vision.

“The local vision must actually be in tune with the central vision. There is no such thing as the central vision being A and the local vision Z; that would be absurd. It means not understanding governance,” Pramono said.

The development of the Thousand Islands is also part of Jakarta’s grand plan to transform into a global city.
