Rare shark found in Borneo waters
GENEVA (AFP): A fresh water shark which was believed extinct
is alive and swimming off the coast of Borneo, Malaysia, the
International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural
Resources said Wednesday.
Until last month, the Borneo River Shark (Glyphis species B)
was known only from plates in text-books and a stuffed specimen
in a Vienna museum.
However, a team of scientists from the conservation group,
working in collaboration with the Sabah fishing department and
assisted by local fishermen, have discovered a living specimen in
the Kinabatangan River, northern Borneo.
The netted fish has been jealously guarded by fishermen, while
other sharks caught at the same time were photographed and then
released.
