Rapist gets eight years in jail

TANGERANG: The Tangerang District Court sentenced a man on
Thursday to eight years imprisonment for raping a woman in his
rented house in Ledug village, Alam Jaya subdistrict, Jatiuwung,
last September.

Presiding Judge Horasman Nainggolan said the defendant, Edi
Susanto, 25, had been found guilty of raping the victim, who had
just arrived from Central Java and was looking for a house to
rent in the village.

The defendant, an ojek (motorcycle taxi) driver, told her that
he knew a house for rent and then offered to take her there.
After taking the woman around the village, no house for rent was
found and the defendant took her to his rented house in the
evening, where he sexually abused her.

Earlier, prosecutor Iwa Pria Wicaksana charged the defendant
with violating Article 285 of the Criminal Code on rape, which
carries a maximum punishment of 12 years in jail. The prosecutor
then sought 10 years in jail for the defendant. --JP
