Rapist faces nine years

JAKARTA (JP): A prosecutor has asked the Bekasi District Court
to sentence a man charged with raping a minor to nine years
imprisonment.

Prosecutor Supinah told the court that Melan Perangin Angin
was guilty of raping an elementary school student. "The defendant
gave the girl Rp 200 and threatened her not to tell anything to
anybody," the prosecutor said.

Suara Pembaruan evening daily reported yesterday that nine
years for the rapist was reasonable.

According to the prosecutor, the girl's father had been
suffering from depression since hearing about the rape. "He died
of high blood pressure days after the rape took place on Aug. 4,"
said the prosecutor.

The defendant pleaded guilty, saying that he had been very
lonely after being in Medan for a few days. (sur)
