Rapidly Changing Weather in Batam, Port and Airport Operations Warned to Stay Alert

Batam weather can change rapidly, prompting authorities to urge greater vigilance, particularly for sea and air transport users. Extreme weather, which can switch from clear to rain quickly, may affect activities in the city. A BMKG forecaster stationed at Hang Nadim International Airport explained that the atmosphere over the Riau Islands is currently quite humid, supporting the formation of rain clouds. He said that in the morning Batam is generally cloudy with relatively warm air. However, from midday to the afternoon, light to moderate rain may occur locally in several areas. ‘The weather in Batam today can change rapidly. Cloudy conditions in the morning may develop into rain in the afternoon due to convective cloud growth,’ the BMKG forecaster said on Saturday (7 March 2026). BMKG said that the daytime air temperature in Batam today is expected to range from 24 to 30 degrees Celsius, with fairly high humidity. This condition makes the formation of rain clouds more likely, especially as air temperature rises in the afternoon. These weather changes could also affect transportation activities, particularly in port and airport areas. Accordingly, sea transport operators, fishermen, and air service users are urged to pay closer attention to weather developments before travelling. In aviation, rain and thick clouds can affect visibility and aircraft take-off and landing operations at Hang Nadim Airport in Batam. Nevertheless, flight operations have continued normally so far, with careful attention to evolving weather. For sea transport, people intending to travel between islands in the Riau Islands are advised to be vigilant for potential strong winds and waves that could occur during rainfall. BMKG also reminds the public to always update weather information through official BMKG channels before outdoor activities or long-distance travel. With weather prone to rapid change, residents of Batam are advised to carry rain gear and exercise caution when driving, especially during rain when roads can become slippery and visibility reduced.
