Rano says support for historical films is insufficient from a funding perspective alone
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta, Rano Karno, stated that support for films with historical themes is not sufficient merely from a funding perspective, but also requires the provision of appreciation spaces so that filmmakers’ works can reach a wider public, especially the younger generation.
“Films like this must be supported collectively, not only financially, but also by giving attention and space so that the younger generation understands history and gets to know national figures,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Rano conveyed that strengthening the character of the younger generation can be built through various media, including films that can convey life values, exemplary conduct, and national spirit in a more intimate manner.
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is committed to developing the film ecosystem through the establishment of the Jakarta Film Commission, planned for 22 June 2026. This step is expected to strengthen Jakarta’s position as an international-scale cinema city.
“Jakarta will become a cinema city. We have established cooperation with various parties, including international ones. This shows Jakarta’s great potential in the creative industry, particularly filmmaking,” said Rano.
Rano, along with DKI Jakarta Provincial Government officials and SOEs, attended the screening of the film “Buya Hamka III” at a cinema in the Menteng area, Central Jakarta, on Monday (20/4).
Rano’s presence serves as a form of appreciation for national filmmaking that highlights inspirational figures, as well as an effort to strengthen historical literacy among the younger generation.
According to him, “Buya Hamka III” holds significant value in introducing exemplary figures to young people, amid their increasingly distant connection to history and inspirational national figures.
“This film was made through a long journey. From the start, the producer understood the risks. However, the most important thing is how the younger generation can get to know Buya Hamka as a role model,” said Rano.
