Rano: "Philosophy of Village People" Book Documents Life Values
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Deputy Governor of Jakarta, Rano Karno, stated that the publication of the book “Filosofi Orang Kampung” by litterateur Harry Tjahjono is significant as it documents life values of the community that are becoming increasingly rare amidst Jakarta’s transformations.
“For instance, interactions between neighbours, the neighbourhood atmosphere, local dialects, and community habits are parts of a cultural richness that must continue to be introduced to the next generation,” he said in an official statement received in Jakarta on Friday.
According to Ranco, current television programmes often lose the authenticity of the village atmosphere; many scenes depict daily life in a way that feels awkward and alienated from the reality of our humble citizens.
Therefore, the Jakarta Provincial Government is encouraging Harry to continue his work by compiling encyclopaedias and follow-up series, ensuring that the noble values of village life remain neatly documented for future generations.
Rano stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government supports various literacy and cultural preservation activities undertaken by artists and the community.
Documentation regarding the history and life of the village is considered capable of strengthening public knowledge about Jakarta’s cultural journey, while also serving as part of the effort to maintain the city’s identity amidst Jakarta’s development as a global city.
He noted that Harry Tjahjono has successfully expanded the storytelling ecosystem by introducing iconic characters such as Mandra, Atun, Karyo, and Pak Bendot, making the village atmosphere feel authentic.
Meanwhile, Harry Tjahjono said that the book “Filosofi Orang Kampung” was born from his concerns regarding the existence of the Betawi community amidst the changes in Jakarta.
Despite facing physical limitations following a stroke, he remains productive, completing two new books and planning to rearrange 30 classic musical works.
He mentioned that his health condition actually provides motivation to produce various novels, poems, novelettes, and dozens of songs themed around Betawi culture.
“Those songs are planned to be re-produced this coming January,” said Harry.
