Rano Karno Reveals Proposal to Process Sailfin Catfish into Charcoal

Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Rano Karno has revealed a proposal regarding the utilisation of sailfin catfish, which are currently being eradicated in Jakarta, to be processed into charcoal as done in Brazil.

“There is a temporary proposal; this has been done by Brazil. It turns out that sailfin catfish also became a problem in Brazil, but it can become another component. It can even become charcoal,” said Rano, quoted by detikcom, on Tuesday (21/4).

Rano was once surprised by the amount of sailfin catfish caught in the previous operation, reaching tons. This prompted the provincial government to seek a more comprehensive handling solution.

“Yesterday was the first time. We were also shocked, the amount of sailfin catfish caught was several tons, we were shocked,” he said.

He emphasised that the sailfin catfish handling programme will continue because it is deemed important to address various environmental issues in Jakarta.

“So, let’s try to do something. This is indeed a programme that we must carry out,” he concluded.

Rano also responded to criticism from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) regarding the burial of live sailfin catfish. He said the spotlight from MUI would be material for evaluation.

“Indeed, yesterday the term was burial, many were not dead yet and so on. For that, perhaps we will fix it later,” he said.

According to Rano, in the future, sailfin catfish handling will be carried out with better procedures, including ensuring the fish are dead before further handling.

“It will definitely be discussed that they must be killed first, like that,” he said.
