Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno wants the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) to emulate the management system of Milan’s San Siro Stadium. He stated that modern stadium management should not solely focus on football matches but also optimise other revenue-generating activities. Rano highlighted San Siro’s use for non-sporting events such as music concerts, art performances, and business functions as a key aspect to learn from. Beyond diversifying activities, he also praised San Siro’s well-organised scheduling system. He said events must be booked well in advance to avoid scheduling conflicts. ‘If you want to use San Siro for any event, you must book it two years in advance. Unlike here, where JIS is full so we move to GBK, and GBK is full so where do we go? That’s proper management, which we should learn from,’ he said. Rano added that professional stadium management would optimise facility usage and generate greater economic value for the region. Beyond stadium management, Rano noted San Siro as a model for fostering sportsmanship in football. ‘San Siro is unique; it houses two major clubs, Inter Milan and AC Milan, in one stadium,’ he said. Rano contrasted this with the ongoing fan clashes between Persija Jakarta and Persib Bandung. He stressed that sporting rivalry should be confined to the pitch and not spill over into animosity off it. ‘Unfortunately, Persija and Persib are still clashing; it’s time to move past this as sport should be about sportsmanship, which is why we need to learn from this,’ Rano said. He stressed football should foster camaraderie, not fan conflicts.
