Rano Karno on Train Accident: I Ordered Jakarta to Assist Bekasi
Jakarta’s Deputy Governor Rano Karno has expressed condolences over the train accident involving the Argo Bromo Anggrek and a KRL at Bekasi Timur Station. Rano stated that he had instructed relevant agencies to assist Bekasi with the accident evacuation process.
“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un, friends. Last night, I saw the incident in Bekasi on television, and immediately that night I ordered Jakarta to help Bekasi. Insyaallah, our BPBD went down to Bekasi, then our PMI also went to Bekasi, even some colleagues from Damkar went to Bekasi,” said Rano Karno after paying respects at the home of the victim, Nuryati, in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (28/4/2026).
Rano said that the four fatalities in the accident were Jakarta residents. One of them was a teacher living in Cikarang.
“Well, this also becomes part of our responsibility, because based on information from the 14 victims, four of them are Jakarta residents. Although one is a teacher who lives in Cikarang, I haven’t had a chance to visit her home but the department head is heading there,” he stated.
Rano said his side had coordinated with Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung. He mentioned that Pramono agreed for Jakarta to help Bekasi in the train accident evacuation process.
“But of course, I also reported to Mr Governor, and Mr Governor also agreed for Jakarta to help. That’s why since last night after I saw it on television, I ordered the Secretary General, and the Secretary General instructed the relevant agencies; since last night our BPBD and PMI have been in Bekasi until today,” said Rano.
“That’s why, since there is a station that cannot be passed, what Jakarta can do is this: the congestion in Bekasi will also impact Jakarta. That’s what is called agglomeration, actually. The transport system, the human movement system, we have to consider that,” he added.
For information, the death toll from the Argo Bromo Anggrek train accident with the KRL at Bekasi Timur has risen to 14 people. In addition, there are 84 injured victims.
“Update 08.45 WIB: 14 deceased, 84 injured victims, handling process still ongoing,” said VP Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba in a written statement, Tuesday (28/4).
The Accident Incident
Based on video footage received by the editorial team, the atmosphere at Bekasi Timur Station appeared tense and filled with passengers. Heroic actions were seen as fellow passengers worked together to evacuate victims on the platform area.
Several passengers appeared limp and seated on the platform in a state of shock after the hard impact occurred. Several people were also seen with head injuries and attempted to provide first aid independently.
The condition of the KRL trainset that was hit remained on the side of the platform with the doors open, but all lights inside the carriage were completely off.
In another video clip, severe damage was visible on one of the Commuter Line KRL trainsets that was crumpled after being hit by the long-distance train. Inside the pitch-black carriage, panic erupted as several passengers were still trapped inside.
Hysterical screams from passengers could be heard clearly in the darkness of the carriage, while others tried to find a way out amid the powerless train conditions.
