Rano Karno on Jakarta's Saturday-Sunday CFD: Interesting, but Requires Consideration
Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno has responded to a proposal from the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) to hold Car Free Day (CFD) twice a week, specifically on both Saturdays and Sundays. Rano considers the proposal interesting as it has the potential to help reduce emissions.
“Actually, these are interesting proposals. Yes, because it will certainly reduce emissions,” said Rano Karno at Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday (23/09/2026).
Rano stated that implementing CFD on Sundays is relatively easier because office activities are minimal. However, if held on Saturdays, the activities of the working public must be taken into consideration.
“But the point is, there are considerations. Sunday is certainly easy. But on Saturday, excuse me, there might still be operations, people going to the office, right?” he said.
Nevertheless, Rano believes that implementing CFD on Saturdays is not difficult. According to him, the activity could be conducted for a limited duration, similar to the current CFD schedule.
“Actually, it is not difficult. It wouldn’t be long, right? It would be just like the current Car Free Day from 05:30 to 09:00,” he said.
Rano believes that conducting CFD for several hours can still contribute to emission reduction efforts. “But the question is whether it would be effective,” he added.
Rano also revealed that he had previously proposed a ‘Car Free Night’ concept. He believes such an initiative could also serve as an effort to suppress carbon emissions and greenhouse gases.
“In the past, I even proposed a Car Free Night. It is actually to suppress greenhouse gases, carbon, and so on,” he explained.
However, Rano stated that several factors must be considered before such a policy is implemented.
“It is an interesting idea, much like our recent one-hour lights-off initiative to reduce emissions. It must be considered. There are many factors involved,” he added.
Previously, the Chairman of the PKS Faction of the Jakarta DPRD, M. Taufic Zoelkifli, suggested that the policy should be trial-tested before being made permanent.
“My suggestion is to conduct a trial for two or three months, implementing CFD on both Saturdays and Sundays,” said Taufik when contacted on Sunday (20/09).
He stated that a trial would be conducted to observe the benefits and the dynamics on the ground. In his view, a decision could be made if a two-day CFD proves to have more benefits.
“Then it can be evaluated to see the pros and cons. If there are more benefits, then we can implement a two-day CFD on Saturday and Sunday. But, if the benefits are not significant, then there is certainly no need to continue it,” he explained.
