Rano Karno Meets Deputy Mayor of Milan to Discuss Urban Arts and Food Security

Jakarta - The Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta, Rano Karno, met with the Deputy Mayor of Milan, Anna Scavuzzo, at Milan City Hall, Italy, on Tuesday (13/5/2026). In the meeting, the two discussed cooperation in the fields of public arts, urban spaces, creative economy, and food security. The meeting was part of the Jakarta-Milan Leadership Exchange Programme facilitated by the World Cities Culture Forum. “Jakarta wants public spaces not only to be places of transit but also spaces for interaction, creativity, and civic pride,” Rano said in a written statement, quoted on Friday (15/5/2026). The programme is planned to be held in Jakarta in July 2026 through workshops and urban art installations jointly created by artists from Jakarta and Milan. Rano stated that Jakarta wants to present public spaces that not only function as places for community activities but also as spaces for interaction and creativity among residents. According to him, the collaboration is expected to beautify Jakarta’s public spaces while opening opportunities for young artists to learn and expand international networks. “Art must be present close to the community,” he continued. The Jakarta delegation also learned about how Milan manages historic areas, museums, and public spaces to keep them vibrant and attractive to both residents and tourists. In addition, Jakarta and Milan discussed cooperation on urban food security. Some topics discussed included the development of urban farming, reduction of food waste, and more modern food distribution systems. On that occasion, Jakarta also promoted museum cooperation and cultural exchanges between museums in Jakarta and MUDEC or Museo delle Culture in Milan. This step is intended to strengthen cultural education and open international learning access for Jakarta’s younger generation. On the other hand, the Milan City Government supports Jakarta’s plan to join the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, a global network of cities focused on strengthening healthy and sustainable food systems. Rano hopes that this international cooperation can provide direct benefits to the community, from better public spaces, strengthening the cultural and tourism sectors, to improving the quality of life for residents. “Every international cooperation is ensured to provide real benefits to the community,” Rano said.
