The Deputy Governor of Jakarta, Rano Karno, has expressed his appreciation for the rapid handling of the road subsidence on Jalan Raya Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, which was successfully resolved within five days. The main route connecting Jakarta and Depok has now returned to normal and has been safe for vehicles to pass since Tuesday (2/6).

Rano admitted to being surprised that the repairs to the underground drainage and the road surface, which had previously collapsed, were completed faster than initially estimated. This rapid execution is viewed as a tactical response by the local government towards infrastructure that is vital for citizen mobility.

“Today I personally inspected the site of the drainage repairs where the road had subsided. I was very surprised that in just five days, this road can be used in very good condition,” Rended Rano during his inspection in South Jakarta.

According to Rano, the work carried out by the Water Resources Agency (SDA) and the Highways Agency (Dinas Bina Marga) has met the required technical standards. He even initially planned to request an additional layer of asphalt but cancelled the request after observing the quality of the work on-site.

“I even asked the Highways Agency to add another asphalt layer. But after seeing the results, it was not necessary. This means the condition of the road is already very good,” he added.

The repair process was carried out intensively since the subsidence incident occurred on Friday morning. During the works, the government temporarily closed parts of the road to provide space for heavy machinery to repair the damaged underground drainage.

“If calculated, they worked almost four full days, morning, afternoon, and night. The road had to be closed because it is impossible to perform such work without heavy machinery,” Rano explained.

Although the road closure caused significant traffic congestion in the Lenteng Agung area, Rano assessed that the accelerated completion of the project was a crucial step in restoring the Jakarta-Depok traffic flow as quickly as possible.

The South Jakarta Water Resources Agency had initially targeted the repair of the collapsed drainage in Lenteng Agung to be completed within two weeks with a budget of Rp380 million. Officers from the Jakarta Water Resources Agency had installed new concrete box culverts in the water flow as part of the road repair efforts on the night of Thursday (28/5).
