The Deputy Governor of Jakarta, Rano Karno, stated that 95 per cent of fires in the Jakarta region are caused by electrical short circuits. This was disclosed by Rano while inspecting residents affected by a fire in RT 002/RW 04, Kebon Kosong, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (2/6/2026).

“In Jakarta, on average, fires occur due to electrical short circuits. Based on our surveys, it is almost 95 per cent,” Rano said at the location. He urged residents to be more vigilant and to routinely check the electrical installations in their respective homes.

“The Jakarta Provincial Government is concerned about these incidents. Once again, what we can do is warn the public; the first thing that must be maintained is electrical safety. This must become our priority,” he continued.

Rano admitted that he had intended to visit the fire site on Monday night, but postponed the visit following advice from the Mayor of Central Jakarta, Arifi, to avoid crowds that might interfere with the emergency response efforts on the ground.

According to preliminary data, the fire affected 304 buildings and impacted 354 heads of households, or 679 individuals. The affected population includes 326 men and 353 women, comprising 35 elderly people, 90 toddlers, 53 primary school children, six junior high school students, 22 vocational high school students, and 414 adults, including pregnant women.

To assist the victims, the Jakarta Provincial Government has prepared several facilities at the evacuation centre located at Yusuf Hamka Field. “As you can see, we have set up a post at Yusuf Hamka Field, complete with an evacuation area, a health post, a public kitchen, and a psychological support post for children,” said Rano.

Rano expressed his hope that similar incidents would not recur and requested that the public pay closer attention to the conditions of their living environments.
