Rano calls for meticulous health inspections of sacrificial livestock

Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno has instructed 744 animal and meat health inspection officers to carry out their duties meticulously and responsibly. “I urge all officers to perform their duties with integrity, meticulousness, and responsibility, while adopting a humane and educational approach towards the public,” Rano stated during the dispatch ceremony for animal and meat health inspectors at the Perumda Dharma Jaya slaughterhouse in East Jakarta on Tuesday. He also instructed officers to ensure all inspections comply with animal health standards, both ante-mortem and post-mortem. Additionally, Rano said that if any signs of disease or violations are detected, officers must immediately coordinate and report to relevant local authorities and stakeholders for prompt action.

At the same event, Jakarta’s KPKP Agency Head Hasudungan A. Sidabalok explained that the purpose of dispatching the animal inspectors is to ensure all animals are healthy before slaughter (ante-mortem). “The slaughter process must also adhere to hygiene and sanitation standards, with the aim of ensuring the sacrificial meat is safe, healthy, intact, and halal for consumption,” he added. He expressed hope that the public would feel secure and comfortable during this year’s Qurban ritual without any unforeseen issues.

This year, the KPKP Agency has deployed 744 officers on slaughter day, comprising 424 from the agency itself, 62 from the Jakarta chapter of the Indonesian Veterinary Medical Association, 208 from IPB University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedicine, and 50 Scouts. The officers will be deployed across all Jakarta regions, including the Thousand Islands. “For 2026 inspections, we aim to check 892 slaughter sites across Jakarta, with an estimated 68,048 animals to be slaughtered this year,” Hasudungan said.
