Randi Zulmariadi Stresses Important Role of Ulama in Maintaining Harmony and the Unity of the Republic of Indonesia
Randi Zulmariadi, a member of Commission VI of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) from the NasDem faction, expressed his support for Ustaz Abdul Somad amid the dynamics surrounding his preaching. He said that differences of opinion in democratic life are normal, but should be addressed maturely while upholding national unity.
Randi asserted that ulama play a crucial role in maintaining social harmony, strengthening national values, and fostering harmony in a diverse society. He believes that preaching that calms and prioritises unity is much needed in Indonesia today.
“Ulama have a strategic position in safeguarding public morals while strengthening the unity and integrity of the Republic of Indonesia. We must respect religious leaders who have contributed to maintaining the nation’s harmony,” he said in a statement to national media on Thursday, 21 May 2026.
The NasDem Batam City chair also said Ustaz Abdul Somad is a ulama known not only for his knowledge of hadith but also for a preaching style that is humorous, light, and easily received by various segments of society. According to him, simple yet substantive sermons allow the religious messages delivered by UAS to reach young people and the general public well.
“He is known as a ulama with strong intellectual capacity, especially in hadith. But on the other hand, his sermon delivery style is relaxed, humorous, and easy for the public to understand. This is what makes his preaching widely accepted by a broad range of people,” said Randi.
He also urged all elements of society not to be provoked by differences of opinion that could divide the nation. He said Indonesia currently needs national solidarity amid a global geopolitical situation full of challenges and uncertainties.
“Indonesia must not be torn apart by dynamics that undermine brotherhood among fellow citizens. In a world of ever-changing geopolitics, we must strengthen national unity and maintain social stability,” he said.
Randi added that the spirit of mutual respect among different groups must be maintained so that the democratic space remains healthy and conducive. He hopes all parties can prioritise dialogue, tolerance, and national values in responding to every difference.
In his view, maintaining harmony is a shared responsibility of all elements of the nation, from religious leaders and community leaders to the government. Therefore, he invites the public to continue protecting brotherhood and strengthening the spirit of gotong royong for the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia.
