Rampant Regional Corruption: 15 Governors and Regents Arrested by KPK

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has arrested a total of five individuals, including the Regent of Sukoharjo, Etik Suryani, in a sting operation (OTT) in the Soloraya area of Central Java. The operation took place on Thursday (9/7/2026) and involved allegations of extortion against officials within the Sukoharjo Regency Government. KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated that investigators seized evidence including precious metals and cash in rupiah, Australian dollars, and Singapore dollars, totalling billions of rupiah. The suspects were taken to the KPK’s Red and White Building in Jakarta for intensive questioning, while others were examined at the Surakarta Police Station. This latest arrest adds to a growing list of regional heads implicated in corruption since the inauguration of officials elected in the 2024 simultaneous regional elections in February 2025. In less than a year and a half, at least 15 regional heads, including governors, regents, and mayors, have been apprehended or named as suspects by the KPK. The majority of these cases involve bribery, extortion, gratification, and abuse of authority related to procurement of goods and services and the filling of positions within regional governments. Data from the KPK indicates that since its establishment, the highest number of corruption cases by institution has come from regency and city governments, totalling 694 cases as of March 2026. The KPK’s sting operations, which have been conducted since 2005, remain a primary and effective method for catching perpetrators in the act, often relying on public reports and wiretapping to gather evidence before making arrests.
