Rampages leave long trail of destruction

JAKARTA (JP): Massive rioting which broke out following the deaths of four Trisakti University student demonstrators Tuesday and continued up to yesterday wrought a heavy toll in destruction of public and private property across the capital.

The city administration is only beginning to estimate the damages, but it has issued a provisional list of major buildings, shops and offices damaged, looted and/or destroyed.

Mobs also destroyed or damaged countless automobiles and motorcycles in the wanton vandalism.

The following is an excerpt from the official list of major buildings damaged, with additional information supplied based on The Jakarta Post reporters' observations.

Central Jakarta

BCA branch on Jl. Wahid Hasyim, Timor car showroom on Jl. Salemba, Hotel Cempaka on Jl. Lt. Gen. Suprapto, Hotel Pecenongan, tycoon Liem Sioe Liong's home on Jl. Gunung Sahari, Auto 2000 showroom on Jl. Garuda, BNI branch on Jl. Samanhudi, Muzatex shopping center, a residential house on Jl. Abdul Gani, a shopping center on Jl. Pramuka, Cempaka Putih market on Jl. Letjen Suprapto, Palmerah market, including Ramayana department store.

North Jakarta

Sumber Ayu Gading Griya housing complex in Cilincing district, Kamal Muara shop/house, Muara Baru seafood restaurant and Pluit Mall in Penjaringan district; Ramayana Permai and Ramayana Semper shopping complexes in Koja district; a showroom on Jl. West Jakarta
