Ramos may name successor on trip
MANILA (AFP): Philippine President Fidel Ramos may name his preferred successor when he travels to Canada and the United States next month, an aide said yesterday.
Ramos will be attending a summit of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Vancouver on Nov. 25. The presidential palace said he would also visit San Francisco and Seattle. No exact dates have been announced.
"It's possible that the announcement will be made abroad," Ramos' political adviser Gabriel Claudio said.
The Philippines will hold presidential elections on May 11, 1998. Ramos is barred from seeking a second term.
However, he has said he will campaign actively for a particular candidate who would ensure the continuity of economic reforms launched under his administration.
