Ramifications of the gubernatorial election

JP/Arief Suhardiman

The gubernatorial election at the City Council building on Jl. Kebon Sirih, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday was marred with some incidents before incumbent Sutiyoso finally won the race.

Fifteen anti-Sutiyoso demonstrators fell to the ground due to food poisoning (photo right) after they ate snacks which they received from an unidentified man. The case was reported to the security officers and the victims were rushed to the Cipto Mangunkusumo Public hospital. They were allowed to go home after receiving medical treatment.

Two members of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) resisted the spray of water cannon and tear gas through martial arts techniques (left, bottom).

Police officers opened the blockade of the demonstrators in front of Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan as the demonstrators tried to block the city councillors from entering the City Hall (left, center). The City Hall is located back-to-back with the City Council building.

To avoid the demonstrators, a number of councillors arrived at the City Hall by a police helicopter (left, above). Sutiyoso also arrived at the building by helicopter.
