Rambing brothers win boxing title for C. Java
JAKARTA (JP): The Rambing brothers, Arthur and Sonny, inspired
Central Java's domination at the Golden Gloves amateur boxing
championships in Cirebon, West Java.
Arthur and his elder brother Sonny triumphed in the
bantamweight and lightweight divisions to lead their province's
romp with three gold medals and two bronzes. Central Java took
the other gold from East Timor-born Feliciano da Costa who beat
former teammate Miguel Listinho in the light flyweight final.
Teenage Arthur, whose boxing skills were nurtured by father
and former national champion Sutan, also won the favorite boxer
award for his brilliant debut at the annual championships.
Host West Java grabbed most of the medals, a gold, four
silvers and three bronzes, to finish no better than third in the
medal race behind East Timor. West Java took some consolation,
however, when featherweight M. Alvarizi was named the best boxer
of the tournament which ended on Monday.
East Timor, one of the country's leading boxing powerhouses,
grabbed two golds through flyweight Fransisco Pinto and light
middleweight Nelson Victor Talise.
The championships were jointly organized by the Indonesian
Amateur Boxing Association and the Indonesian Journalists
Association. (amd)
