Ramadhan Celebration: Blind Children Actively Recite Braille Quran
Children with visual disabilities at the Penganthi Sensory Disability Social Welfare Centre (PPS) in Temanggung Regency, Central Java, are actively reciting the Quran using Braille-script manuscripts throughout the holy month of Ramadhan as part of their spiritual development programme.
Head of the Penganthi Sensory Disability Social Welfare Centre, Teguh Winianto, stated that religious education has been specially designed to accommodate their visual limitations. Through this approach, the children and programme beneficiaries are able to study and understand the Quran independently.
According to Teguh, Quranic learning begins with letter recognition through Braille Iqro. After mastering the fundamentals of Braille lettering, participants progress to learning using the Braille Quran.
Beyond reading, the children are also guided to memorise Quranic verses as part of strengthening their religious understanding. These activities are intended to help them develop a closer connection with Quranic teachings.
Throughout Ramadhan, activities at the Penganthi centre intensify with various religious programmes. Daily, the children participate in congregational prayers and religious study sessions in the form of seven-minute lectures (kultum).
These lectures are delivered by instructors from religious supervisory staff who accompany the programme beneficiaries. Activities typically take place in the afternoon from 17:00 WIB until approaching the time for breaking the fast.
As the time to break the fast approaches, the children receive iftar snacks distributed as alms from rotating contributions by centre staff. Following this, they continue with collective breaking of fast in the dining hall.
After breaking the fast, the children perform congregational Maghrib prayers with their supervisors. Evening worship continues with congregational Isha and Tarawih prayers.
