JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The government is confident that economic growth during the first quarter of 2026 will be above 5 percent, supported by the maintenance of public purchasing power during Ramadhan and Eid.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa estimates that economic growth could reach 5.7 percent in the first quarter of this year.

This figure is considered quite good amid the current global turbulence.

“Economic growth could be 5.6-5.7 percent, if it’s a rough estimate. That’s already pretty good, amid the global turbulence now,” he said at the Directorate General of Taxation (DJP) office, Jakarta, on Saturday (21/3/2026).

Purbaya stated that the impact from the Middle East conflict is being absorbed by the government by ensuring that energy subsidies continue to run.

He said the government will continue to ensure that the public can carry out activities normally.

“The current global impact is still not felt because it is absorbed by the government. So we are really ensuring that the public can carry out activities normally, and as much as possible in the future it will be maintained like that,” he said.

He explained that after the Eid period, the government will focus on maintaining domestic demand as the engine of economic growth.

This includes strengthening the private sector and public purchasing power.

The government is also committed to keeping fuel oil (BBM) prices, especially subsidised ones, stable amid fluctuations in world oil prices.

In addition, government spending will be accelerated to ensure it is realised on time according to needs.

“We will ensure that government expenditures that must be spent are spent on time,” Purbaya revealed.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto projects that economic growth in the first quarter of 2026 could reach 5.5 percent.

This optimism is supported by the surge in public spending during the Ramadhan period.

“It looks like the 5.5 target can be achieved from the activity during Ramadhan,” said Airlangga on the same occasion.
