REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Ramadan is known as the month of the Quran, as it was during this month that the holy book was first revealed. The tradition of increasing Quran reading and completing it has become a common practice for Muslims. However, behind the enthusiasm to complete the Quran, there is something equally important to pay attention to, namely the quality of the reading to ensure it is done correctly.

KH Ahmad Sarwat Lc, in his book ‘Ramadan Between Sharia and Tradition’, explains that Ramadan is often referred to as the month of the Quran. It was during Ramadan that the Quran was first revealed to the world. It was also during Ramadan that the Quran was revealed in its entirety from the ‘Lauh Al-Mahfudz’ to the heavens.

Every Ramadan, the Prophet Muhammad SAW read the Quran more often. In fact, the Angel Jibril Alaihissalam would come down specifically to evaluate the Prophet’s memorisation and recitation.

Therefore, it has become a Sunnah (tradition) in Ramadan to increase Quran reading. The tradition in our society, namely ‘tadarusan’ (communal Quran reading), is quite good. Many people can be seen reading the Quran, either after completing the Tarawih prayers or at any time.

Thus, it has become a tradition that during Ramadan, there is a habit of reading the Quran until it is completed, even several times.
