Ramadan Blessing! Cucumber Traders at Kramat Jati Market See Sales Boom
Cucumber traders at Kramat Jati wholesale market in East Jakarta experience busy trading during Ramadan, with sales volumes and profits increasing substantially.
One trader, Sunarso (50), who has sold cucumbers during Ramadan for nearly six years, reports selling approximately 3 to 4 tonnes of timun suri (a popular cucumber variety) daily. “Praise be to God, sales are very good because buyers come in constantly every day,” he said.
The cucumbers sold at the market are sourced from Pandeglang in Banten. The commodity is priced at Rp5,000 to Rp6,000 per kilogramme, depending on size and quality.
Sunarso notes that weather conditions affect sales volumes. “When the weather is clear or hot, sales usually increase further because timun suri is typically made into ice or fresh beverages,” he explained.
According to Sunarso, selling cucumbers is an attractive option due to strong market demand during Ramadan. However, outside this season, he sells general vegetables daily at Kramat Jati wholesale market. “While selling cucumbers, I suspend my vegetable sales activities temporarily,” he said.
