Imsak Time Set at 10 Minutes Before Fajr

This year, the Indonesian government has set 1 Ramadan 2026 on 19 February. According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs website, the imsak time is set at 10 minutes before the onset of the fajr (dawn) prayer time.

Imsak linguistically carries several meanings, including “to refrain” or “the time limit for beginning the fast.” Scholars are in agreement that the time limit for commencing the fast is precisely at the appearance of fajar shadiq (true dawn).

Nevertheless, some scholars hold the view that when the fajr time is approaching, Muslims intending to fast should refrain from eating, as the period falls within a zone of caution, although other scholars do permit eating during the syak (doubtful) period.

The imsak time in Indonesia is not intended to alter the fasting period by bringing it forward from the limit prescribed by Islamic law, but rather serves as an effort to preserve the sunnah tradition and as a safety measure to ensure that Muslims do not inadvertently cross into the prohibited time.
