Rainstorm hits Liquisa

LIQUISA, East Timor: Rainstorms sweeping the area over the
past four days have destroyed five houses, damaged crops, and
knocked down a bridge and a dam.

There has been no word of casualties but the disaster has
disrupted land communication between Dili and Atambua, East Nusa
Tenggara.

In the Maubara district in Liquisa regency, the storm has
caused landslides and trees to topple, blocking roads and causing
traffic jams between Dili-Maliana-Atambua-Kupang.

The local public works office yesterday started building an
emergency bridge and evacuated a dozen families.

As of yesterday, the floods and rain had not ceased and three
vehicles were still buried in landslides in Liquisa.(yac)
