'Rain Repertoire' to go to Tokyo

YOGYAKARTA: After its success in performing Waktu Batu at the In Transit Festival in Berlin, Germany, in June this year, Yogyakarta-based Teater Garasi has been invited to perform Rain Repertoire during the Physical Theater Festival in Tokyo, Japan, this month.

Rain Repertoire is a 30-minute play written and directed by Teater Garasi playwright Gunawan Maryanto with body language as its main means of story telling. As such, no dialog is found in the play.

"The Physical Theater Festival is an international event held in Japan to seek out the possibility of bodies speaking at a play. We are honored to accept this invitation to represent Indonesia at the festival," Gunawan told The Jakarta Post on the sidelines a performance of Rain Repertoire here recently.

According to Gunawan, four countries, namely Indonesia, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan are to participate at the festival. Teater Garasi is scheduled to perform on Nov. 11 and Nov. 14 at 8.30 p.m. (local time) at the Store House Building.

Developed in 2001 and based on unfinished poetry by Gunawan Maryanto, the play will also be performed at Bentara Budaya Jakarta on Nov. 17 and Nov. 18 at 8.15 p.m. -- JP
