Rain hits Padang after dry spell

PADANG, West Sumatra: After one month of dry weather, a storm followed by torrential rain hit Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, on Saturday morning, causing flooding in some parts in the city.

Many trees fell in the storm and roofs were blown off residential houses, however, no fatalities were reported.

Local residents said they were surprised by the heavy rain, because the local meteorology and geophysics office had predicted that there would be no rain in the near future. -- Antara
