Rain Finally Falls in Bantul
Rain finally fell in Bantul Regency today. The area had previously recorded Indonesia’s longest period without rainfall.
Rain began in parts of Bantul last night, but was initially uneven. This morning, rainfall became widespread across the regency.
“Yes, it rained last night, but not everywhere. This morning the rain was widespread across Bantul. So, after more than four months, it has finally rained,” Bantul Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) secretary Ribut Bimo Haryo Tejo told detikJogja on Saturday (24 October 2026).
Ribut said he hoped the rain would continue rather than last for just one day, as rainfall could replenish residents’ dry wells.
“Based on past experience, one to three bouts of rain are not enough to restore water in wells. It takes at least a month to replenish them,” he said.
For that reason, BPBD Bantul will continue delivering clean water until residents’ wells have fully recovered.
“We will continue providing clean-water deliveries until residents’ wells have fully recovered,” he said.
Previously, the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) was reported by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) as the province with the longest period without rain, at 161 days. The longest dry spell was recorded in Bantul Regency.
Dr Mamenun, head of BMKG’s Yogyakarta Class II Climatology Station, said the 161-day period without rain was recorded at the rainfall monitoring post and the Pajangan Agricultural Extension Centre (BPP) in Bantul.
“The longest period in Indonesia was indeed recorded at the BPP Pajangan post in Bantul Regency. It is the longest when compared with monitoring points in every province,” Mamenun told detikJogja on Monday (19 October 2026).
“The longest dry spell recorded was 161 days at the BPL Pajangan monitoring post in Bantul. This is the data updated for the first ten-day period of October,” she added.
