The retail freight business via rail has shown positive growth throughout 2026. By July 2026, the service had handled more than 2 million shipments with a total volume of approximately 41,980 tonnes. This volume increased by 15% compared with the same period in 2025, which recorded 36,367 tonnes. The growth of the KAI Logistik (Kalog) Express service indicates rising public demand for logistics services that are easily accessible, reliable and offer inter-regional connectivity.

“The growth in retail freight up to July 2026 is a positive indicator of increasing public demand for logistics services with an extensive network. We see this momentum as an opportunity to continue strengthening service quality while delivering logistics solutions that are increasingly relevant to customer needs,” said Kalog VP of Commercial Ferdian Pardosi.

According to Ferdian, parcels remain the commodity with the largest shipping volume. Up to July 2026, Kalog Express recorded approximately 1.78 million parcel shipments. In addition to parcels, animal shipments totalled around 107,000, while motorcycle deliveries reached approximately 88,000 units. The highest volume of motorcycle shipments occurred in July 2026. The increase in motorcycle deliveries was partly influenced by public mobility as the new academic year began at universities. This performance also demonstrates the strengthening of the courier segment entering the second half of 2026.

“In July 2026, the number of shipments of various main commodities grew by an average of around 15% compared with the previous period. This trend shows that demand for retail services is not solely reliant on parcel delivery but is also increasingly diverse according to public needs,” he explained.

Ferdian said the growth of the retail freight business is in line with the prospects for the courier, express and parcel (CEP) industry in Indonesia. The industry is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.12% during the 2026-2031 period. This projection is seen as opening room for the company to continue developing its retail freight business.

One of the company’s main assets is the rail network connecting various regions in Indonesia. The advantage of a rail network linking different regions is an important foundation for delivering efficient and integrated logistics services.

“Going forward, we will strengthen connectivity and service capacity while improving the customer experience. This step is expected to strengthen Kalog Express’s position as part of the public’s logistics mobility solution,” he said.

Ferdian added that the improved performance at the start of the second half of 2026 provides a basis for optimism for the company to continue strengthening its retail freight business. This growth is also expected to support an increasingly dynamic national logistics ecosystem.
