Raids on prostitutes

On Dec. 1 at around 1 a.m. I saw several security officers of
the city administration, accompanied by policemen, rounding up
prostitutes on Jl. Hayam Wuruk. Not many were caught on this
occasion, although, based on my daily observations, there are
many prostitutes who roam this area, often in large groups.

Perhaps on that particular morning, they had known of the raid
well in advance, as many had gone into hiding. As a Muslim, I
consider such raids very necessary, more so during the holy month
of Ramadhan. Although a bit late, it still gives the impression
that the city administration is serious about eradicating immoral
behavior.

As a Jakartan, I suggest that such raids be conducted at least
twice a week and the planning be kept secret so that a larger
number of prostitutes are apprehended. Searches should not only
be carried out on the streets, but also nightspots in the area,
as it is common knowledge that prostitutes abound in these
places.

The Taman Lawang area is also another eyesore at night. Some
of the transvestites in this location are so bold as to have
nothing on!
