JAKARTA (JP): The Association of Indonesian Radio
Communications Users (RAPI) will support the development of the
country's tourist industry by installing radio rigs at remote
tourism destinations.
"We will soon contact local offices of the Ministry of
Tourism, Post and Telecommunications throughout the country to
find out which areas need such devices," the association's
chairman, Eddy M. Nalapraya, told reporters here yesterday.
Eddy, a former deputy Jakarta governor, was yesterday
officially inaugurated as RAPI's chairman by Minister of Tourism,
Post and Telecommunications Joop Ave, together with other
executives.
"I will firstly inform RAPI executives at provinces that
Minister Joop has asked the association to support the tourism
industry," he said.
Joop said in his speech that there are many potential tourist
destinations in the country which have no telephone facilities.
"Radio communications will absolutely be of help for tourists
visiting such areas," he said.
Eddy also said that RAPI will review its membership as there
are many users who are not registered at the organization.
The chairman of RAPI's Jakarta chapter, Dharma Nasution, said
that there are currently about 50,000 users of radio
communications but only 9,000 of them are registered. (icn)
