Radio plays contest on conflicts

JAKARTA: The frequent conflicts that hit the country have inspired a radio play script writing contest on conflicts and their resolution.

The contest is being organized by Common Ground Indonesia, an independent international institute, in cooperation with Radio 68H, a radio news agency, which has a network of 200 radio stations throughout the country.

The winning piece will be used to produce a soap opera series that will be broadcast across the country, while the writer will receive Rp 6 million.

"Plays and other arts can contribute practical new ideas on how to settle the problem without violence," said Vanessa Johanson, Country Director of the institute.

In the past 19 years, Common Ground has conducted various activities to prevent and curb conflicts in 15 countries. The radio play contest is one of its first activities in Indonesia.

Scripts must be submitted by Dec.31, 2001.
