Radio Klasik FM to close down?

It is really unfortunate that Radio Klasik FM (FM Classic Radio) reportedly must sign off for good at 00.00 July 23. As a matter of fact, this radio station, which specializes in classical music, for a long time has been just like a light in the darkness that is enveloping our music world. The news that this radio station will cease operation is a big blow to me, an enthusiastic classical music lover since 1971. Many other listeners, I believe, share my shock.

One of the faithful listeners of this radio station, for example, told me that one of his children can only go to sleep while listening to classical music. To him, this radio station is a real friend. A blind friend of mine suggested that the listeners go to the street to request that the closing of this broadcasting station be canceled. Even my nine-year-old kid was disappointed upon learning that the station would cease operation.

Radio Klasik FM has become dear to the community. Hence the community's great sense of belonging to this broadcasting station. Many listeners -- from teachers to businessmen -- have expressed readiness to donate in order that this radio station may continue its classical music broadcast.

The management of the station has put down a change in broadcasting format as the reason for stopping the broadcast. To me, though, this reason is hard to swallow. The management should be more responsive to the listeners and tell them the real reason behind the closing.

Classical music has its own place in the hearts of community members - be they owners of simple transistor radios or sophisticated stereo sets. This music has a universal appeal and brings peace to the listeners. Indeed, peace is what the community is craving now, particularly considering that at blood- letting, killing and torture seem to be the order of the day.

Now that Radio Klasik FM, the herald of peace, is going to cease broadcasting because of some unclear reason, the listeners can only heave a deep sigh. The station's management should not be concerned only with personal interest but also should take into account that without the classical music that Radio Klasik FM broadcasts, the yearning in the listener's soul for peace will go unsatisfied.
