Qurban Meat Packaging Guidelines and Annual Obligation Clarified
Proper packaging of sacrificial meat requires attention to container selection, packaging process, and correct storage to maintain freshness and safety for consumption. Key points include:
Wrap sacrificial meat in clear plastic or bamboo besek containers. This is safer for food and more hygienic.
Meat handling should be conducted on a clean surface, such as a table.
Meat and offal must be separated, as offal is more prone to contamination and can affect meat quality.
Store sacrificial meat in the freezer to preserve quality.
Is Qurban Mandatory Every Year?
Qurban is performed during Eid al-Adha, also known as Lebaran Haji. According to the majority of scholars, the obligation of Qurban is fulfilled once, but it is highly recommended annually for those who are able.
According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Islamic Affairs Directorate (Bimas Islam), the religious ruling on Qurban is recommended annually for Muslims who are financially capable. This differs from Hajj, which is obligatory once in a lifetime.
Basis in Hadith
Mikhnad bin Sulaim al-Ghamidi reported: We were standing at Arafah with the Prophet (PBUH), and I heard him say, ‘O people, every family must sacrifice an animal each year, as well as ’atirah. Do you know what ’atirah is? It is called rajabiyah.’ (Sunan Abu Dawood, Ibn Majah, Tirmidzi)
This hadith serves as the basis for the recommendation of annual Qurban for those who are able.
However, ’atirah in the month of Rajab is no longer applicable, as it has been abrogated in Islamic law according to the majority of scholars.
Therefore, Qurban is not a once-in-a-lifetime obligation. For financially capable Muslims, it is recommended annually.
