Hasan Basri (HB), a Qur’an teacher in Ampenan, Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), has been detained by Mataram City Police over allegations of sexual assault against a pupil. Police say Basri carried out the abuse gradually, masking it with jokes.

‘The suspect is a Qur’an teacher to the victims. The acts were not carried out directly, but gradually and concealed with jokes,’ said AKP I Made Dharma Yulia Putra, head of the criminal investigation unit of Mataram Police, on Wednesday (4 March 2026).

In a joking tone, Basri asked the victim to massage him. He then embraced and held the victim’s hand.

‘He also massaged the victim’s thigh, and sat on the victim’s lap,’ added Dharma.

Not stopping there, Basri became more aggressive and indecent. He started touching the victim’s sensitive areas under the pretence of not being deliberate. After that, Basri kissed the cheek, kissed and inserted his hand into the victim’s sensitive area.

‘(The suspect) touched the victim’s genitals from outside his clothing,’ he said.

At that moment, the victim realised that the teacher’s behaviour was no longer appropriate. The victim told a friend, and others experienced the same.

‘The victim then told his parents, who reported to Mataram Police. The victim is now in custody,’ he said.

The victim’s guardian, Joko Jumadi, said the abuse occurred during 2023-2024. Basri conducted the abusive acts during the time the victim was reciting memorised verses.

‘The abuse took place during the recitation sessions. So the victim would recite verses, and the abuse occurred when the victim was handing over the memorised verses to the suspect,’ Joko, head of the Kota Mataram Child Protection Agency (LPA), said.

According to Joko, the victim has since returned to normal activities. ‘The victim has returned to normal activities. The legal process for the suspect remains,’ he added.
