Quirky Cowboy-Hat-Wearing Housewives Become SPGs for Sacrificial Cattle
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.COM - A woman appeared sporting a striking cowboy-style outfit under the Ir Wiyoto Wiyono flyover in Sungai Bambu, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta. Not for a fashion show, the 52-year-old Ella was working as a Sales Promotion Girl (SPG) for sacrificial animals at a stall run by a cattle and goat trader.
Her outfit included a light brown cowboy hat, pink hijab, red shirt overlaid with a black cardigan, black tight trousers, and green boots. Although her daily life revolves around house chores, Ella moved with agility while working as an SPG for sacrificial animals.
Whereas usually she handles a frying pan in daily life, she now must touch cows or goats. With her green boots, Ella did not hesitate to walk around the pen and occasionally step on animal waste to ensure the cows and goats for sale are in good health.
She did not expect to land such a unique job as an SPG for sacrificial animals at an age when she was not young.
“Surprised as well, but I am grateful to receive this fortune. Ahead of Eid al-Adha there is a call to become a SPG for cattle, so I accepted,” Ella said during an interview with Kompas.com at the location on Wednesday (20 May 2026).
She accepted the job to fill her spare time and to increase her income.
Moreover, to make it more unique, Kastono also requires the SPG for sacrificial animals at his stall to wear cowboy-style clothing. “The inspiration came from media outlets. Cowboys are usually associated with cattle herders. From that, I thought, if our marketing staff are dressed like cowboys, it might be more appealing,” he said at the same location on Wednesday.
Currently, Kastono has employed four housewives aged over 30 as SPG for his sacrificial animals. He admitted that he deliberately chose housewives so they could have the opportunity to earn income. “We want to provide opportunities for mothers to earn a living. So, it is not just young people; mothers also need extra income,” he added.
The duties of the SPG are to welcome guests, promote, and explain the types of sacrificial animals available. Before working, Kastono has already given training to his SPGs so they can serve and explain well to prospective customers. He also emphasised that although they are mothers, the SPGs have attractive, friendly, and photogenic appearances.
