Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Culture Fadli Zon highlighted the quality of scripts as an important instrument that plays a significant role in the success of the Indonesian film industry. “One of the bottlenecks in our filmmaking is the matter of scenarios, scriptwriting, and great films can only be realised if our scenarios are good,” said Fadli Zon at the SINEMA 2026 Script Competition Awards event in Jakarta on Monday. Fadli stated that quality scripts will maximise the abilities of the actors or actresses involved, as well as elevate the values that are intended to be presented to the audience. “Indeed, in this context (regarding historical films), the challenge is that the quality must be good, and that quality starts from the script, from the scenario,” said Fadli. In the context of filmmaking in Indonesia, Fadli encouraged directors and film scriptwriters to produce many high-quality scripts in various genres besides horror, such as history, culture, and children’s stories. “Recently, I watched several good premieres, hopefully in the future they will receive even more appreciation, not only at the national level, but also internationally, at festivals, and especially we hope this becomes part of our cultural economy,” he said. One of the efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Culture is to hold the “SINEMA 2026 Script Competition” programme to discover the talents of the nation’s youth who can produce high-quality scripts. On the other hand, Fadli Zon also hopes that in the future, the younger generation will not only learn about culture and history from mere books, but also from film works that showcase much of the nation’s culture and the struggles of its heroes. “Film is the easiest way to introduce our culture in the midst of world civilisation. So all cultural expressions (can be) there, from acting, music, arts, performances, language, traditions, oral, cuisine, even fashion can be included in a film.”
