Quake shakes North Sumatra
TARUTUNG, North Sumatra (JP): Tarutung, a hill town no stranger
to natural disasters, was struck by an earthquake last week that
was powerful enough to send people scurrying out of their homes in
panic. There were no reports of casualties.
Antara reported that the quake measured 2.3 on the Richter
scale and lasted for eight seconds on Thursday. The Meteorology
and Geophysics Agency in Medan said the epicenter of the quake
was located just south of Tarutung.
The region has been repeatedly struck by powerful earthquakes
and devastating landslides in the past. (emb)
