In response to RCTI's "Night Bulletin" on Oct. 12, 1995,
Syafei Anjasmara, director general of social assistance
development, said that a lot of money has been received to be
distributed among the Krinci quake victims in Jambi.

This statement is heartening because it reflects concern and
national social solidarity. But we should be sure that the aid
reaches the victims. We do not want past experience to repeat
itself such as when aid for tsunami victims in Flores in 1992 was
misappropriated. This was despite warnings by the coordinating
minister for people's welfare that every cent of the aid should
be accounted for.
