Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Digital payment systems through the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) offer substantial benefits to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

43-year-old Nina said QRIS, which she set up through PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BRI), has become an alternative payment method for her sweet iced tea stall. She noted that many customers prefer paying via QRIS at certain times, particularly towards the end and beginning of the month, which she links to payday cycles.

“It’s not just the young who use it, sir; even older customers pay for their iced tea with QRIS,” she told CNBC Indonesia in Pondok Gede, Bekasi on Thursday, 28 May 2026.

Nina said digital payments simplify her cash flow and income recording. “After a QRIS transaction, I take a photo to record and verify it,” she added.

“Despite the advanced QRIS payment system, some fraudulent individuals exploit loopholes by providing fake transaction screenshots. Fortunately, Nina has not fallen victim to such scams in over a year of trading,” she said.

She declined to provide detailed historical data on QRIS transaction volumes but said the system offers efficiency in payments, record-keeping, and monitoring, as she shares duties with her staff.

According to BRI’s website, BRI’s QRIS merchant types are divided into five categories:

  • Static QRIS is a fixed QR code used to receive payments from various payment apps.

  • Dynamic QRIS is automatically generated for each transaction and is unique. It is displayed via cash register systems (EDC, POS apps, or mobile merchant), scanned by customers, has an expiry time, and must be reprinted for each transaction.

  • Merchant Presented Mode (MPM) QRIS is available at the merchant’s premises and scanned by customers using smartphones to complete transactions.

  • Customer Presented Mode (CPM) QRIS requires customers to present their QR code for scanning by the merchant’s cashier using a provided scanner to complete transactions.

  • QRIS Tap is an NFC-based payment method where users simply tap their smartphone on a reader for automatic transaction processing.

Benefits of having BRI QRIS include:

  • Simplifies payment transactions by accepting payments from multiple apps via a single QRIS.

  • Transactions become more efficient, reducing queue times.

  • Accepted by all e-wallets with a maximum transaction limit of Rp10 million per transaction.

  • Supports interoperability between banks and payment service providers (PSPs).

  • Promotes financial inclusion, particularly for MSMEs and the wider public.

  • Supports Bank Indonesia’s national non-cash payment system policies.

  • Ensures transaction security through the national QRIS standards set by Bank Indonesia.

What are the requirements to become a BRI merchant?

  • BRI Bank Account: Must have an active BRI account to receive QRIS transaction funds.

  • Identity Documents: Valid business owner’s or manager’s KTP (ID card).

  • Business Data: Including business name, address, and type.
