QRIS Now Usable in China, BI Governor Highlights AI Involvement
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo has officially introduced the implementation of QRIS services in China. This launch adds to the list of countries where Indonesians can make cashless transactions abroad. Prior to China, QRIS was already usable in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea. “And today we launch QRIS RI-China,” said Perry at the launch event of the Indonesian Digital Innovation Centre (PIDI) as well as the Indonesia-China cross-border QRIS at Grha Bhasvara Icchana, Jakarta, on Thursday (30/4/2026). Perry stated that the QRIS service is currently used by more than 60 million people. According to him, the development of this digital transaction system is inseparable from Bank Indonesia’s ability to utilise advancements in artificial intelligence or AI, thereby unifying transaction languages into a single QR code now known as QRIS. “AI can help us. Initially, QRIS was fragmented; we unified it, all payment systems united through QRIS,” he explained. As is known, Bank Indonesia has conducted trials of QRIS usage in China. In those trials, the transaction volume reached 1.64 million with a value equivalent to Rp 556 billion. The use of QRIS in China will be followed by 24 providers from Indonesia, consisting of 16 banks and 8 non-bank institutions, while from China there are 19 providers.
