QRIS Has 71 Million Users as Bank Indonesia Considers Using It for Credit Scoring
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti has confirmed that QRIS transaction data could become the basis for credit scoring by financial services providers assessing users.
The proposal has been under discussion since last year but has yet to be implemented. Destry raised it again at the Danantara Technology Innovation Investment Forum (DTIIF) 2026 in Jakarta on Monday (26 October 2026).
“This is at least one success in providing financial access to smaller merchants, including small-scale merchants, whose data could eventually serve as a form of credit scoring,” Destry said.
She said QRIS continues to record significant growth in user numbers, with 71 million people now using it for transactions.
In September 2026, the number of users stood at 67 million, or around a quarter of Indonesia’s population.
“Users have now reached 71 million, while there are 49.4 million merchants, 97% of whom are MSMEs,” Destry said.
At the end of last year, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) welcomed the use of QRIS transaction histories as a basis for assessing creditworthiness, including in the online lending industry.
Agusman, OJK’s Executive Head of Supervision for Financing Institutions, Venture Capital Companies, Microfinance Institutions and Other Financial Services Institutions, said this in a statement published on the InterActive QRIS website.
“OJK welcomes the use of financial transaction data, including QRIS, as alternative data for creditworthiness assessments in the online lending industry,” Agusman said in late 2025.
However, Agusman cautioned that using the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) for credit scoring must comply with personal data protection principles and prudential standards.
“The implementation requires further consideration, while continuing to take account of personal data protection, data validity and prudential principles,” he said.
