Qatar Says US-Iran Negotiations Are Progressive, Peace Deal Draft Under Discussion

Qatar has stated that efforts to resolve the conflict between the United States and Iran are at a progressive stage. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said a draft potential agreement is being circulated among the relevant parties.

Speaking to CNN on Tuesday (4/8/2026), Al-Ansari was asked about conflicting statements issued by US and Iranian officials regarding whether negotiations are taking place. He said all parties are still intensively pursuing a short-term resolution.

"We can confirm that efforts are ongoing with all parties. We are currently working towards a diplomatic resolution," he said.

Al-Ansari said various parties on the ground continue to work on addressing the crisis between the US and Iran to reach an agreement. "(There are) current efforts on the ground (to resolve the crisis that are at) a very progressive stage," he said. "We are working with all parties to see these efforts through. So I can confirm that these efforts are ongoing at the moment."

He added that countries across the region are involved in working together to resolve the issue. He noted that his country is coordinating very closely with Oman to facilitate negotiations between the two conflicting parties.

"(Qatar and Oman) are facilitating talks between the two sides and exchanging ideas as well as exchanging drafts between the two sides," Al-Ansari said. He added that a draft peace agreement between the US and Iran has now been discussed and exchanged between the two parties.

"Drafts are always being exchanged… I can tell you that a draft of a possible agreement has been made and is being circulated among the parties," he said.

The focus of the mediators at present, he said, is finding a short-term resolution that will bring Washington and Tehran back to the negotiating table. "At the moment, we do not have any agreement regarding direct talks," Al-Ansari said. "We hope that if we can restart talks in the near future, we will be able to push for a major agreement that will help us return to a peaceful situation in our region."
