Qatar Hopes Strait of Hormuz Agreement Involves Regional Countries
Doha (ANTARA) - Qatar wants any future agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz to involve regional countries and have international security, said Majed Al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Tuesday.
“Any agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz after the war must involve regional participants and have international security,” Al-Ansari said in a press conference.
Considering that the strait is a natural waterway, not a man-made canal, it is very important to reach an agreement on joint ownership, he added.
Despite various initiatives to resume shipping through the strait, Qatari ships and tankers currently cannot pass through it,” the spokesperson said.
On 28 February, the US and Israel launched attacks on targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran responded by attacking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.
The escalation of the conflict has practically halted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, the main supply route for global oil and LNG. As a result, fuel prices have risen in most countries.
