PWI Chairman Warns Journalists Against Involvement in Drugs and Gambling

The General Chairman of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI), Akhmad Munir, has reminded journalists not to become involved in drug trafficking networks or gambling practices, as this can damage the integrity of the profession and the organisation’s image. “I remind PWI members not to act as protectors or obstruct officers in carrying out enforcement or uncovering drug cases, let alone become involved either as users or dealers,” Munir said while attending the ‘PWI North Sumatra Family Gathering 2026’ in Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, on Saturday. Munir stated that the warning was important considering North Sumatra is one of the regions vulnerable to drug trafficking. In addition to drugs, he also reminded PWI members to stay away from gambling practices because gambling networks have a wide reach and the potential to drag in various groups, including journalists. “The same applies to gambling practices. There is a phenomenon that has the potential to cause similar problems because gambling networks are quite extensive and come into contact with various circles, including journalists,” he said. According to Munir, maintaining professional integrity is part of the responsibility of all PWI members in safeguarding the organisation’s dignity and public trust in the press. On that occasion, he also invited all regional PWI administrators to embrace both young and senior journalists to join as members of the organisation. “We encourage all provincial PWI branches to embrace young and senior journalists to become members,” he said. He added that PWI continues to strengthen member development through understanding the Journalistic Code of Ethics, the organisation’s Articles of Association and Bylaws, as well as various provisions governing the journalism profession. Munir also conveyed that the handing over of PWI North Sumatra junior membership cards was part of efforts to build the professionalism of journalists who adhere to journalistic ethics. In addition, PWI is currently conducting a membership verification and inviting inactive members to reactivate their membership status in their respective regions.
