PVMBG Reveals Anak Krakatau Volcano Has Never Reached 'Awas' Status

The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has stated that Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at Level III, or Siaga, status. PVMBG revealed that the volcano has never reached Level IV, or Awas. “It has only ever reached Level III, never Level IV,” said Anggi Nuryo Saputro, an observation officer at the Mount Anak Krakatau monitoring post, in a statement on Thursday (9/7/2026). Anggi noted that during the 2018 tsunami, Mount Anak Krakatau was also at Level III. The tsunami was triggered by the collapse of approximately 60 per cent of the volcano’s body. “At that time it was also Level III. Since 2018, it has been at Level III several times,” he said. He mentioned that the current tsunami potential is not the same as in 2018. At that time, the tsunami occurred due to a landslide of the volcano’s body, which caused its height to drop from around 338 metres above sea level to approximately 157 metres. “According to experts in Bandung, the potential is different from 2018. In 2018, the height was around 330 metres, now it is 157. So, regarding the potential tsunami threat, according to those in Bandung, it is not like 2018,” he explained. According to Anggi, the status of Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III, or Siaga. Eruptive activity is still fluctuating. “Sometimes it increases, sometimes it decreases. Today there have been no eruptions. Yesterday there were seven,” he added.
